Day Five: Thursday
The most eventful day of Holy Week is Maundy Thursday. The word Maundy is a derivation of the Latin word, commandment. Jesus, in John 13:34, gave His followers this new commandment, “Love one another, as I have loved you.”
On this day, Jesus sent Peter and John to the Upper Room in Jerusalem to make preparations for the Passover Feast. That evening, before supper, Jesus washed the feet of His disciples. His actions on this night were to demonstrate how His followers should love one another.
With the foot washing complete, Jesus shared the feast of Passover with His closest disciples and one betrayer. During this meal, He said, “I have been very eager to eat this Passover meal with you before My suffering
begins. For I tell you now that I won’t eat this meal again until its meaning is fulfilled in the Kingdom of God.” Luke 22:15-16
It is during this event that Christ established the Lord’s Supper or Holy Communion. Even we, modern believers, are to continually remember Christ’s sacrifice and proclaim His death till He comes. After supper was concluded Jesus and His disciples went to the Garden of Gethsemane, where Jesus prayed in agony to God the Father. Luke’s Gospel says, “His sweat became like great drops of blood falling down to the ground.” Luke 22:44 It is on this night that Jesus is betrayed by a Judas kiss. He is immediately arrested and taken to court. As He faces a trumped-up trial, Peter makes his famous 3 denials before the rooster crowed. Thursday’s events are recorded in Matthew 26:17–75, Mark 14:12-72, Luke 22:7-62, and John 13:1-38.
