It was the end of summer (2022). During a meeting with our lay pastor, Jessica Davis, the subject of, what in the world were we going to do about Sunday School for the kids, came up. Since we have just a handful of kids on Sunday mornings, Jessica came up with the idea of, “Taking Sunday School out of the building. Take it to where there are kids.”
What taking Sunday School to the kids looked like was us resurrecting our Christmas Music Camp materials and offering to teach some kids at Rock House the drums and the bass guitar.
We also volunteered to do live music for them once a month. Of course, if you know me, you know I found a way to weasel our way into playing for them every week.
We arrived the first Wednesday night and set up our gear. We started off with, “Good God Almighty,” complete with actions. We ended with one of my favorite songs, “Trust You.” When we got to the chorus, 40+ kids- kids who may have had their first hot meal of the day just moments before, kids who don’t always have a place to sleep, kids who have to be given toothpaste or they may not have any, kids who don’t always have adults who care about them- these are the kids who begin to sing at the top of their voices, “I will trust You, Jesus, Trust You with my life…” Not one mouth was closed. Every mouth was open, proclaiming their trust in Jesus.
No matter what our reasons for being involved in Rock House Kids, and there are several, this song being sung by these particular kids our first night out will be the reason we go back week after week after week.
